So this week I notices just how auditory my son is.. Funny, I know this and speak about this issue to many folks at our meetings, but these situations happened one after the other... so. I guess I needed reminding:)
Day one:
He was in speech and we were playing a new game where he had to read a sentence on a card if he wanted to get further clues in the game.. and I pointed to the sentence and he said ..." I AM NOT READING... I WANT TO HEAR.
Day Two
He was in Physical therapy and he was rolling a basketball up the wall with two hands over his head and back down the wall keeping pressure on the ball the entire time...so get this not one time did he look at his hands... not on time did he look at the ball.. not one time did his face look toward the wall...his head was turned towards his therapist and he was listening to her words glancing at her mouth ( she was speaking to him..encouraging him to take the ball up high above his head and then back down and counting down the number of reps left). It really made me think at that moment my gosh.....he acts like he is blind.....
Day Three: Ryan was letter boarding in front of a stranger and the guy turned to me and said.. he isn't even looking at his board!... and I said.. yeah.. he has it memorized like we do when we type... but again.. his eyes ... the no looking thing and the thought came back to me.. he acts like he is blind.
So in the past Ryan said I cant think and hear and look and move body at the same time....So.. why could we get him to see the letterboard.. some of you might wonder....well it was thanks to the sensory understanding and neuroscience of rpm ... Soma started out teaching him...as if he was blind taping choice the sound of tearing paper.. no visual pictures just auditory description...uh... Brilliant!!!!
Just asked him as I was writing this about his thought on the subject and he NOT wanting to letter board he told me he wants to eat...LOL...gave me this brief incomplete statement when asked.. tell folks what the deal is with your eyes and what's up with your ears.. he says.. ,, RYANS MIND FEELS HEARING... that is kinda interesting comment??
He came back in the room.. and to my surprise wanted to letter and said the following.. he said BEAWARE HINT LIKE LISTENING! YOUR MIND IS NICE MOM HINT I LIKE HELPING...
So hope we helped you understand a little better .. many kids are using one sense more then the other so make sure you are speaking to them too and this is.from a Mom by the way whose open learning channel is auditory! ( if you want to know which sense you seem to favor.. ask yourself this questions.. when getting directions to a local place in town.. what does that look like... for me I don't need someone to write down the direction.. that is kinda annoying to me ..I will say this...statement...no don't worry about writing it done ..just TELL me how to get there.. ok..and again.I repeat it back to hear my own self say it.. I'm and auditory MOM!
We as a family, decided to create a blog to help share the great news that there is a method out there to help our children have a voice who cannot speak. I give complete credit to Soma Mukhopadhyay, at H.A.L.O(Helping Autism through Learning and Outreach) organization. She was the one to start it all, and really helped my son Ryan and so many other children throughout the world.

I Won't Change His Words.....
Today Ryan started 7th grade Literature. We read a story called Chura and Marwe, an African folktale as told by Humphrey Harman.
It is a wonderful story about two slave children who love each other dearly. As the story develops, you see the love these two slave children have for one another. As the folktale opens, it explains that Chura is a young slave boy who is very unattractive. They say he has a face like a " toad." and he is hard to look at when he passes by. Unlike Marwe, whose external beauty was simply magnificent to those who looked upon her.
The question Ryan had to answer before he left his virtual classroom was the following: How does Chura exemplify the saying," Don't judge a book by its cover?" He answered the teacher:
Chura is very peaceful. He is loving and keeps Marwe near his heart.
Weary having to see people look at his appearance.
He learns intense beauty lives on inside.
I thought... who writes like that??...so different yet so meaningful ... most people don't speak or write like this...it is .not "proper" English, but I won't change his words. I see that this is how in Ryan's mind he speaks.
He speaks from one who can relate to Chura's challenges as well. He has shared how people stare at him and are scared of him... but that is another post another day. It is all good and Ryan I am proud of you once again!

Ryan's school writing on Spring.
It is amazing to me how Ryan sees and hears from God. I believe they have a very unique relationship... one I will never truly understand. Ryan had to write on a why spring is beautiful.. so unique... in his thoughts and how he sees things... .
Spring
Spring is beautiful because to God life has meaning. Life is the melody of spring. Spring eases the weariness of winter. Spring calls... I love each day. Each Spring our peaceful God decides springtime is to live another year. He allows heaven on earth. A divine peace we receive when he gives us spring.
Colors,: green red, yellow and orange! Green is so energetic. You see energy in fields of green! It is caught in this needed weary world.
So, to each leaf a call to life. Spring fills universe and gets eternity
Candice is in it to Win It!!
The family has been watching American Idol and I paused the show and asked Dad and Ashley and Ryan who they were voting for and Ryan said.. Mom so easy to include Ryan can't say how much I love you... he was thanking me for pausing the show and getting the board to include him in our voting.. yes.. how many times are children with Autism ignored....Well guess who he voted for.. yes Candice... he said Candice is in it to win it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! just like Randy says all the time.... it cracked me up and made me so "darn" ( favorite grampa word of Ryan's) happy. That was three weeks ago.. so fast forward to tonight.. when Candice sang her I am beautiful song...which is about how Jesus sees us as beautiful.. well Ryan and all of us are so happy at the end of the show when Candice just blew it out ..with her final song.. and I asked Ryan about the I am beautiful song... and.. Well he says... " Candice is a girl God called. Feels God's feelings of intense Love" Wow.. so deep.. I just love Ryan ... so precious...

Project Paranormal Investigators
Today we left the neighborhood and we saw a car in our neighbors drive and on the back it said," PROJECT PARANORMAL INVESTIGATORS." So, Ashley asked about that and I said it is like ghost hunters! We watched them take out their supplies from their car! So, I asked Ryan what do you about ghosts being in X"s house and Ryan spelled ,"ERIE" and then we were talking about what they could be doing.. and we asked Ryan what he thought about it ... and he cracks us up Ashley is in the backseat of the van and she told me she is thinking he is going to say Fear or Fearful something like that.. when he hit the F then she thought...oh maybe the word... Frightening when he hit the FR.. but he spells FREAKY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! How funny is that!!!!!!!!!!!!... I Just LOVE LETTER BOARDING ..

Pie and More Pie!
We were at Whole Foods today ...this is Ashley talking! Ryan and I were getting some food while dad was shopping. We passed by all the samples the bakery had of different flavored pies! Yum! I tried Cherry and then Strawberry and some other flavor pie.. I asked Ryan if he wanted to try some. He didn't, he is not a "pie guy". So we went along with our shopping and Ryan started making a lot of noise and getting in Dad's face.We knew he was trying to tell us something. So we got the letterboard and Ryan spelled, " Ashley got a bit carried away with the samples." I laughed so hard. I wanted to try one of each and Ryan was waiting on me the whole time wanting to hit the pizza section... so I'm sure he was bored while I was snacking! He is so funny....:)

Renaissance Art for Ryan....with a Beautiful Hint of Red!
My dear friend's husband is a graphic artist. He loves history and art. One day my friend was looking at Ryans school courses and she noticed Ryan was behind in Art. She shared that her husband loves art history and would glady teach Ryan. Her son, who also has Autism is Ryan's good friend ..so we decided to have a class for the boys together!
I can't tell you what an impact this had on Ryan ! Both Families together learning!!! He kept saying," SO INTERESTING LEARNING ... PLEASE CAN WE HAVE ART CLASS AGAIN. SO XTREMELY INTERESTING. RYAN LIKES ART. He made observation about the beautiful pictures Mr. X brought to share with us.. Ryan commented and his friend too on apects of the art they enjoyed. Ryan liked the use of warm colors... noticed the use of the multiple colors of yarn in the tapestry. ... But what was so interesting was as my friend's husband shared his passion for Art.. it created a energy where we all were becoming so interested in what we were learning... Together we learned, talked and discussed our thoughts on Renaissance Art!
I helped by RPMing it per say, for the boys, and bringing it to both boys based on their RPM experience level. It was thrilling. Paul my husband shared some interesting historical facts about the time period and then I asked Ryan.. so do you have any thoughts you want to share with Mr. X and he said.. I GUESS YOU ARE VERY CARING DAD. Well the room fell silent and at that moment I looked up at Mr. X and he was so taken back by Ryan's words..... his face turned red and he became speechless.. It was a great moment .. This was the best ..it was teaching from a person who had a passion about what he was sharing.. . and it so beautifully and simply done.
Thank you my friends for sharing your passion and all your effort you brought to our classroom .... Ryan ended by asking, CLASS VERY PLEASING CAN WE HAVE PLEASE MORE ART CLASSES. .. Ryan learned about, Royal Renaissance portraits, Tapestry, Brugels use of color and much more.. Wow.. what a interesting lesson!
